Inside the Sand Kid, Tahar Ben Jelloun composes a multi-layered tale about Ahmed, a female socialized as a man, who also struggles to reclaim her sexuality. Bill Jelloun contrasts gender and sexual orientation to suggest that a person's features can be designed and transformed by will, but his sexuality is usually predisposed and will also be the determining factor showing how he will act and determine himself within his community.

Ahmed, a product of culture, is brought up as a guy and thus demonstrates characteristics of the man. To receive the liberties granted to men, Ahmed conceals her feminine body by holding her upper body. Furthermore, her father train locomotives her being aggressive since society needs violence in men and weakness in women. " My father gave me a blow…and said, ‘Stop crying! You aren't a girl! ' He was right--tears are very womanly! I dried my eyes and went out looking for hooligans to fight…" (26). Even following Ahmed menstruates and understands she is a woman, she proceeds her father's lie. The girl does not downplay her masculinity, instead, the girl intensifies it by dominating her sisters and getting married to her aunty. Ahmed's cruelty over other folks is a community display of her male organ and a self-reassurance of her superiority. " I speak of servitude…I shall produce her [Fatima] cry and let her enjoy her feelings” (40). Though Ahmed can be described as woman by nature, nurture makes her a guy.

Gender socialization is also shown through the women who are taught to accept inferiority in a male-dominated society. Ahmed's mother submits to Hajji, allowing him to make an effort cures for the " accursed seed” (9) that he feels, make her infertile intended for sons. The sisters, afraid of Ahmed, keep out of sight and quietly obey her. Similar to guys who comply with the objectives of brilliance, women also comply with the expectations of inferiority. The consensus of society enables the inequality, and Ahmed addresses this kind of in a conversation to his sisters, " I don't have to remind you that Now i am a man of order and this if in our house women are...
